About the Talakos
The Talako (talako is the Choctaw word for eagle) Indian
Dancers Family Club was formed in 1986. It is devoted to sharing American Indian
culture with the community through dance. The group has now completed over 2000
performances.
Membership is open to all boys and girls under the age of 18. Most Talako
families have American Indian heritage, but this is not required. All new
Talakos are taught dancing and are assisted in forming their dance regalia.
Expense money is furnished by the club. All parents serve on the Board of
Directors.
Parental participation is strongly encouraged. The youth members have a lot of
enjoyable experience and the opportunity to enhance their self-confidence,
self-esteem, and physical fitness. Major events in addition to the shows include
a formal Naming Ceremony and the Annual Awards Dinner.
